Five-time Olympic swimmer Alison Sheppard MBE has brought to an end a record breaking international career spanning more than 17 years. The 32-year-old Commonwealth Champion announced her retirement today on her return from the New York leg of the FINA World Cup, where she picked up three silvers in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Individual Medley and 50m Breaststroke.

Weir Named Athlete of the Year

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia freshman Amanda Weir has been named the Atlanta Journal Constitution Female Athlete of the Year. Weir will be honored at the 2005 National Girls and Women's Sports Day awards banquet Wed., Feb. 9, at The Crowne Plaza-Airport in Atlanta.

The award is given by the Atlanta Journal Constitution for athletic excellence in 2004.

Weir, who is a freshman swimmer at Georgia, earned a pair of silver medals as a member of Team USA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. On the first night of competition, Weir swam the third leg of the women's 4x100 freestyle relay, which finished second in American-record time. She captured her second piece of hardware swimming the anchor leg of the 4x100 medley relay in the qualifying heat. The USA team posted the second-fastest qualifying time in the prelims and went on to finish second in the final. - From SwimNews online
